OK, if you’ve read this far, you know it’s a Chardonnay today…and you’re asking only one question: will it remind me of whatever new butter brittle caramel frappa ‘thing’ that Starbucks rolls out this time of year?
No. No, it will not.
This fruit is from 25 year old vines, and the same vineyard that CERITAS makes its PORTER-BASS CHARDONNAY from. Their 2010 made quite a bit of noise. You can get on their mailing list and pay $55 (sorry, sold out), or click the buy button below and make it easier on yourself.
Point is, the Porter-Bass vineyard delivers the acid and mineral structure, the salinity, which we look for in great cool climate chardonnay.
The majority of this Porter-Bass is the Old Wente clone, which delivers structure, minerality and citrus notes. The Rued clone fills it out with floral flavors and provides richness on the palate. The wine was barrel fermented but aged in neutral barrels so it’s no oak-bomb. For the first half year the wine was stirred monthly, leaving it with just enough creamy texture.
The nose features honeysuckle and minerality, and on the palate citrus notes interplay with Anjou pear and baked apple.
The wines of Porter Bass are certified Biodynamic by Demeter. They’re not just dabbling in the trendy stuff, or "lutte raisonnée" (when we can); they are Certified.
